Scars on the body of the victim (JAILED! Clement Obeng) |
Clement Obeng, a labourer who resided at Atimatim, a suburb of Kumasi, nearly killed the minor after subjecting him to severe beatings with a cane for wetting his bed.
The convict, a native of Kumawu in the Ashanti Region, pleaded guilty to the charge of causing harm contrary to section 69 of Act 29 of 1960.
Presenting the facts of the case to the court, Police Chief Inspector Comfort Baffour Kyei said the mother of the child, Benedicta Obeng, who was the complainant, had separated from the convict.
She said Benedicta was initially solely taking care of the victim until she lost her job after a short illness; a situation which made it difficult for her to provide the needs of the child.
Thus, she had no option but to call on the convict to assist her; a request he obliged and demanded that the victim be sent to him at Atimatim, where he was staying with his girlfriend.
On September 23, 2012, the complainant called on him to find out how the child was doing only to find the victim’s face swollen.
According to the prosecutor, the child was sick with severe bruises all over his body and his face.
The boy accused his father of physically assaulting him for wetting his bed during the night.
The convict was subsequently arrested by the Suame Police after the plaintiff had lodged a complaint with them.
