university senior lecturer shot dead!

A senior lecturer with the department of Mass Communication, University of Maiduguri, Malam Murtala Mohammed has been shot dead by unknown gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect.

The University Don was shot dead today, Sunday at about 5 pm while on a visit to inspect his ongoing building project around 202 Housing Estate in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital.

Murtala who was undergoing his Doctorate degree course was said to have died on the spot when the gunmen fired several shots at him.

Although, there was no confirmation from the Police, several attempts to get the Borno State Police Commissioner to comment on the incident did not yield result.

Speaking with some students on phone, Daily Post was told that, killing and kidnapping of lecturers is becoming rampant that most of the lecturers have now gone into hiding.

Abdullahi Suleiman said”One of our senior lecturers, now Dr. Abba Kagu is still nowhere to be found. These people are only salary earners, they are not politicians and they do not have the money these gunmen are looking for. For God’s sake, how can someone just go and shoot Malam Murtala of all people, who was very kind.

I cannot still believe it when one of my colleagues in the department called this evening to tell me that some gunmen went and killed Malam Murtala. I asked how, when and why. This man is too good to go this way, I mean he was every students role model; but why?” he lamented

Another femala student, Laraba Adamu, who was seriously hit by the sad news said”it is not fair, it is not fair….wallahi, Allah will judge them.”

According to her, the crises in Maiduguri had made her to spend more years in school than the four years she was supposed to spend.

“this is set back for heavens sake. We have now spent about six years due to this crises. Most of my lecturers have left. My fear now is what happens if this killings lead to the closure of academic activities? This is wicked.” she said.
